To all the fathers out there, Happy Fathers Day. I recently watched the documentary on HBO by Adrian Grenier, Shot in the Dark. The star of HBO's Entourage, made this movie in 1999. It is a search for the father that he never knew. Throughout the film they ask the question, what is the definition of fatherhood. To me this was an easy question, role model. Doesn't matter, good or bad, your father is your role model. I happen to have had a great role model, it may have taken me a long time to realize this but my father was the kind of man that I only wish I could be. This is said all too late, my dad passed away in June of 1980. My dad had his faults but the memories of those faults are the first to be forgotten in time. My father was 41 when I was born. As I grew up and did the things young boys did, little league, Pop Warner football, I wish my dad had coached those teams ( yeah you remember the coach's kid always got to play and got to play the best positions) but my dad left the coaching for the young dads. My dad was always there to watch( at a picnic table past the outfield fence with a beer or two) and when in my first four years of little league and Babe Ruth baseball the league had four homes, my dad was always one of the fathers that helped build the fields. All of this while watching possibly the worst baseball/football player ever ed. note: if my kids are reading this that is a bold face lie, your father was the best player on every baseball team he ever played on and in football the only reason I was last in running laps was to make sure that all my teammates made it, I was and still am a team player. I will never forget the first time I went into a bar with my dad and he ordered beers for us both, I still get that warm feeling whenever I am out with my children.
My only regret, ok regrets, I had a few but then again too few to mention, sorry got a little Sinatra there. My biggest regret is that I never told my father I loved him enough times. Then one day it is too late. I am not writing this for my kids to see. This is just for me. This is just my way of making amends for my lacking while my dad was alive by making sure he will never be forgotten. I think that the measure of a man is in the smiles and laughter in the faces of people when they talk about him. A couple of months ago when I was in Baltimore with family, Sean and Sara got to hear a few Uncle Jack stories from my cousins. I sometimes wish that my dad had lived long enough to have seen all of his grandchildren. I know that they would have loved to have been spoiled by grandpa because that's what grandparents do. Bill Cosby said, "This was not the people that raised me these are old people trying to get into heaven. My father, who when you asked for 50 cents would tell you his life story, now walks into the room and says, who wants money". So all you fathers out there spend today with your kids and grand kids, and everyone else spend time today with your father, see him if you can, call him if you have to and at the very least, think of him, and smile.
If you need to know the meaning of Father's Day just look at these photos. Notice there are none of my father. Please mothers take the camera every once in a while so Dad can be in the pictures.http://picasaweb.google.com/saratogairish/FatherSDay

Ok, my public has spoken. In case you haven't checked the comment section, I found this one today. Anonymous said...
Why don't you and your lazy ass update the blog? We're waiting.........

So here you go, me and my lazy ass are updating. Why would someone be so coarse as to bring up the fact that I have a lazy ass? Would they have said, Why don't you and your lazy eye update the blog? I don't think so. It would not have been so hurtful Had they said "Get up off your fat ass....." but to pick on a medical condition as serious as lazy ass is beyond me.

Worse day ever. yesterday I left work early to attend the Track and Field picnic for Mike and Jack. I got home in time to pick up my camera and head over to the state park. Low and behold there was no power on in my house. I took a look at the meter and saw that National Grid had cut off my power. As a lot of you know I am moving next week and I had turned over some things to a Realtor. One being to make all the payments concerning the house starting in May while the Realtor has repairs done to the property so that it will come up to market value. A couple of phone calls, a few letters, one nasty note taped to the front door and a process server last week made it clear to me that my Realtor had let me down. I don't know for sure, he won't return my calls. So in the process of straighting everything out I forgot the electric bill. Ta da, no power. I called National Grid, they sent me to Price Chopper to receive a fax and return the fax to them. As all this was going on my car started to act up. I finally was told by National Grid that a reconnect order was sent out at 5:26 pm and that it may take up to 24 hours for this to happen. So last night Jack, Mike and I listened to the Yankee game on the radio by candle light.
(The Yankees win, Thhhhheeeeee Yankees win)
This morning I called into work, emergency annual leave, started out for the garage when the car seemed to be fine. No noise, no hesitation, no burning smell. So I went home. Mike had to be at work at ten so I drove him over, no problem. I went to Hanaford to pick up a few things and when I tried to leave, problem. So half an hour later the tow truck dropped me off at the house, still no national grid (17 hours). I did a little packing for the move, threw out a few things that for some reason we had to save, and waited. Jack got home from school at three, still no National Grid (21 1/2 hours). Finally, at 3:45 with just over ninety minutes to spare, National Grid showed up and turned on the power. Everyone happy right? The cable is out. I call Time Warner on my cell phone, I love when they ask if you are calling from your home phone? NO. I have your phone service and when the cable goes out so does my phone. Some how a disconnect order had been placed on my account (?) Wait, there's more. Apparently an order to cancel was on for yesterday, removed and put back on for today. The teck on the phone can't seem to fix the problem and sets up a service call. this service call can be anywhere between now (about 4:45) and nine tonight, are you going to be home till then? I couldn't bear to tell him the story of the car, I just answered Yes. Somehow about 29 minutes later the cable came back, road runner came back, the phone came back, so I called and cancelled the service call. Now I just have to find out about the car.

Pete Rose had 4256 hits in his 24 year career as a baseball player. Peter thinks he should be in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Pete thinks he was the greatest ball player of all time. The only thing I have in common with Pete Rose is that we both are banned from the Hall of Fame for betting on baseball. Pete is trying to worm his way around and sometimes admit to betting and other times denying. I will tell you straight out I bet on baseball. I guess that makes me a better person then Pete. Pete bet money, hard earned cash. I bet my self esteem, worth more then money. Last weekend the greatest revelry in sports (ESPN and Fox Sports not my opinion but I do agree with it) was renewed at Fenway Park in Boston. The division leading Red Sox and the last place Yankees were to meet for a three game series. Being a true Yankee fan I got on the phone with two other fans, Jeff Carney and Rob Przedwiecki. We bet the big three of Red Sox Fans in the Saratoga AOH, Brian Murphy, Chris Bergman and Dick Sheldon. Which ever team won the series the other fans would have to don the caps of the winning team at the AOH meeting on Thursday night. The Yankee'a won the first game on Friday night. The Sox came back strong on Saturday. It all came down to ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball game. In a great game, Alex Rodriquez hit a ninth inning home run to give the Yankees the lead. In the bottom of the ninth, Ortiz hit a ball that looked like it might make it but was just a bit short. The Sox got the tying run to first but that's where it stayed and the game ended in a Yankee win.

At the Thursday night AOH meeting at Tinny's bar in Lake Desolation, Chris Bergman and Dick Sheldon wore Yankee caps and had their pictures taken as Yankee fans. Brian, oh Brian, had prior commitments? I'm sure Mr. Murphy could have shown up late to take his medicine. At least he could have taken a picture and sent it to this blog for publication. Brian, Brian, Brian, I am so disappointed in you but then again you are a Red Sox fan and the self proclaimed "King of the Red Sox Nation". As soon as I get a photo it will be posted.

And now, with out further adue. Yankee Fans Chris Bergman and Dick Sheldon.

Congratulations to two good sports.
I know it would have been easier for both if the bet was only money.
